LEE'S SUMMIT – This week, the KC Scout team took second place in a statewide competition that highlights innovation and
creative problem solving.
The Innovations Challenge is hosted by the Missouri Department of Transportation to highlight ideas that could become
statewide best practices. KC Scout won for their integration of a 911 data feed from the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The 911 data feed streams traffic incident information directly to the
Traffic Management Center. This gives them a
greater ability to quickly respond to incidents, such as posting immediate updates on KC Scout dynamic message sign boards.
Scout staff has successfully expanded the integration of 911 traffic information beyond the Missouri State Highway Patrol,
so now the Traffic Management Center also receives incident information from the Kansas Highway Patrol and Johnson County,
Kansas emergency services.
Since its inception in 2007, the Innovations Challenge
has generated more than one thousand employee innovations,
with more than 100 chosen to be MoDOT best practices. Many of those best practices are shared by transportation partners
in Missouri and across the nation.
KC Scout is Kansas City's bi-state traffic management system, designed to lessen traffic jams by improving rush-hour
speeds, increasing safety by decreasing the number of rush-hour accidents and improving emergency response to traffic
situations by clearing incidents quickly and safely. Scout manages traffic on more than 300 miles of continuous freeways
in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
